My journey into genealogy, started in 1996, with the desire to create a family reunion booklet. I had the help of my 86 year old grandmother and her two sisters, who were 89 and 83 years old. Granny found a photo of her grandparents and using the information that I go from the sisters, the archives and library, I searched for 3 years and was able to find 3 typed pages of information on my family. There was so little information accessible on the computer, at that time and the only DNA testing was for paternity testing.
Fast forward 28 years, and now you can uncover a wealth of genealogical information with just a few keystrokes. While determined research is still essential, numerous websites, both paid and free, have made the process more accessible. DNA testing has also added a new dimension to genealogy. There are countless methods to conduct your search; the key is to start and verify your findings with factual evidence.
It’s okay to take some information that you find and use that as a basis for researching further but just because someone posted it on a website, it doesn’t mean that it is accurate. Even with government records, you will find that human error plays a part in that as well. The information is only as good as the employee taking it or the source giving it.
